Saint Francis of Assisi Parish Celebrates 40 YEARS
This year, 2018 Saint Francis of Assisi Parish celebrates 40 Years. The Church Bulletin Covers and our Church Website lists our Anniversary Events – SAVE THE DATE! Together with the Parish Pastoral Council, we invite you to join us as we continue to grow as Parish of Faith, Hope and Charity.
Honor our PAST
The plan for our Parish began in 1955 when Bishop Joseph Hurley, of the first Florida Diocese in Saint Augustine, purchased a 28-acre tract in the region of Buck Creek in Grove City. In 1975, the people in this locale requested the Celebration of the Mass, hoping to have their own Church in the near future. Beginning on September 10, Mass was celebrated in the Rotonda Community Center and later in Lemon Bay High School as a Mission of Saint Raphael Parish. Established on November 29, 1978 by Canonical Rescript by the Bishop of Saint Petersburg, the new Parish received Saint Francis of Assisi as its Patron. Father Michael Cottrell became the first Pastor and promulgated the official Rescript at the first Parish Masses on Sunday, December 2. Bishop Thomas Larkin officiated at the Dedication of the Church on November 22, 1980. On April 6, 1989, the Parish Center was dedicated; in 1997, the Memorial Garden opened; and the Rectory was completed in 2002.
Celebrate our PRESENT
Today, we are a vibrant Parish with holiness in the Spirit and generosity in Ministry. We number over 4,000-registered members. Our Goals are to WELCOME; to WORSHIP; and to WITNESS. There are many Ministry opportunities in Liturgy, Evangelization, Catechesis, and Outreach to needy persons, our Parish Women’s Guild and the Knights of Columbus. Each month this past year, we actively connected our Parish Ministry to the seven Charisms of Saint Francis of Assisi to deepen our communion with God and one another. Beginning this Winter Season, we scheduled six weekend Masses to accommodate the new population growth.
Prepare our FUTURE
Please join me in our Anniversary Prayer that our Parish continues in the future to be a haven of Prayer and a model of Ministry. With the strength of Christ’s Sacrifice and Sacraments, may Saint Francis of Assisi Parish continue as an instrument to bring all our people safely into God’s heavenly presence.
Sincerely in the Lord,
Father Richard York, your Pastor
